    Second, for some people, Facebook is necessary for work, thanks to the company monopolizing the concept of a town square for a lot of communities. So yes it kind of is "society" now in this cyberpunk dystopia.

    Finally, even if somebody explicitly endorsed that social network, that doesn't mean they necessarily agree with the AI data centers that use multiples more resources and are unnecessary for Facebook's running.

    There's a little problem though: people who assume it's real won't get told. Not even through their own AI. I downloaded the fake protest picture and asked, using the persona of someone naive.

    Then I asked if it was real. Only then did it bother to check:

    Today's AI industry is partly supported by demand generated by circular investment. Nvidia and tech giants invest in data center operators and AI companies, with that money then turning into GPU and cloud usage fees. Actual demand is difficult to see, increasing the likelihood of overinvestment in data centers.

  • Every time I read an article about Facebook, I hate them a little more.

    Meta argued that Strike 3 Holdings failed to show that Meta actually intended to use Strike 3 Holdings’ videos to train its AI models and that Meta, the company, was actually responsible for downloading the videos, as opposed to rogue employees downloading porn on company time from company IP addresses.

    I think they protest too much.

    And it's extra scummy to blame corporate behavior on scapegoat employees.

    How thoughtful of Facebook. They underpay people to moderate harmful content that gives them PTSD, but don't surveil them. Never mind the welfare of the workers, they're just trying to avoid any blowback that could happen down the road that could make them look like the monsters they are.
